1643-4 Charles I York Mint Ebor Error Halfcrown

£3,000

Charles I (1625-49), Halfcrown, York Mint, (1643-4) Type 6 , Third horseman EBOR (E of EBOR over struck over a Y?) below in small lettering, King seated on horseback left,  mm. lion, CAROLVS. D. G. MAG. BRIT. FRAN. ET. HIB. REX., rev., Crowned oval shield dividing crowned CR, CHRISTO. AVSPICE. REGNO.,  mm Lion (Bull 569; Besly 3-B;  Brooker 1083 ; Hawkins 6;  N.2314; S.2868).

A few deposits in and amongst the legends but wow what a Halfcrown ! We fortunately offered at the start of this year the Bull plate coin for this variety that also happened to be Ex Colin Adams and ex Lingford, however this specimen eclipses it. Remarkably well made and Extremely fine in state, much like it would have been when it was first when struck by Nicholas Briot on his famed Rocker presses. The Ebor Legend correction most interesting with what appears to be a Smaller Y beneath the E.
