1630 - 31 Charles I Fine Work mm Plume Shilling - Ex Webb, Lockett, Brooker and Martin Hughes Collections

£3,600
Charles I (1625-1649), Tower mint under the King (1625 - 42), Shilling, Group C, mm. plume, bust 3, rev. plume over shield, less ornate garniture, pellet stops both sides,  (S 2788; N.2222: Sharp C3/5; SCBI Brooker 467, this coin)
-
An extremely rare example of the very rare C3 portrait which was identified by Michael Sharp and only issued as a piece of fine work from carefully engraved dies. Incredibly only 4 are known to exist with one residing in the British Museum's Collection. This example has a staggering pedigree traceable back to its appearance in the Henry Webbs Sale at Sothebys in 1884. The coin is well toned and well-centred on a round flan, some light creasing, otherwise in our opinion very fine and extremely rare.
